Ian Young Memorial Lecture: “Beyond RECIST – imaging cancer’s response to radiation and systemic therapy – why, when and how?”
Dr Joe Mercer, Consultant Radiologist, The Christie NHS FT
Synopsis:
In recent decades, advances in the non-surgical management of many cancers have improved outcomes for patients. With more treatment options now available and increasingly complex management of cancer patients, imaging assessment is more important than ever to help inform management decisions. This talk will look at how imaging strategies have kept up with evolving non-surgical treatments for cancer both in the context of clinical trials and everyday practice. The complementary roles of CT, MRI and PET/CT will be considered in a range of malignancies, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the various modalities in different situations.
Learning objectives:
- The strengths and limitations of RECIST criteria and how these have been adapted for specific tumour types and treatments including modified-RECIST and iRECIST
- Modern radiotherapy techniques and post-treatment imaging appearances in the chest and pelvis
- The current role of FDG-PET/CT and MRI when assessing response to systemic anti-cancer therapy
