Talk synopsis:

The challenges of transformation in the NHS are great. Whilst the NHS has transformed, much of it has been unplanned. The adoption of technology is probably the most important transformation and has been done without central planning. It promised the delivery of more efficient care, better information and better planning but the reality hasn’t been a more efficient NHS. All the same, its now impossible to imagine delivery of care without much of the technology currently in place. So is the future better than the past? Have we built the foundations for the future or just another folly?

Talk synopsis: 

Alison will be sharing how they have been transforming WWL on its journey towards becoming a University Hospitals Trust, implementing our research strategic aims in nurturing a research culture across the Trust, and enabling staff to be more involved in research and in the development of research careers and bringing more research to their patients across the Wigan Borough and through the community clinical research hub.

SCA referrals for lower GI cancers - is excessive symptomatic FIT testing a boon or a bane for patients and resource-burdened NHS cancer diagnostic services?
Mr Sanjay Furtado, Associate Specialist in the General and Colorectal, Wrightington, Wrightington Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS FT

Talk synopsis:

1. Introduce what FIT testing is, its present role in symptomatic colorectal cancer referrals to secondary care and how our clinical pathways incorporate this for further testing.
2. Dr Furtado will touch upon the advantages of FIT testing and how it positively impacts patients’ lives and allows focused testing on FIT positive patients and how it additionally provides a source of reassurance both to patients and primary care givers when FIT is negative.
3. He will then discuss how the increased workload has affected surgical departments (workforce, logistics) and why it may affect patient care negatively.
