Hypertension: Transforming Tech, Treatments, Targets and Training

Talk synopsis:
Hypertension control remains one of Greater Manchester’s greatest opportunities to prevent cardiovascular disease. Around one in four people locally have blood pressure above the current treatment threshold, and even a sustained reduction of 10/5 mmHg is associated with major reductions in heart failure, stroke, coronary events and cardiovascular deaths.
This presentation will look beyond where hypertension care is today to what better control could achieve tomorrow. It will explore how more ambitious blood pressure targets, supported by accurate measurement and greater use of home and ambulatory monitoring, could translate into substantial population health gains.
The talk will then focus on practical routes to better control: systematic use of evidence-based regional treatment pathways; tackling medication non-concordance; simplifying treatment through low-dose, single-pill combinations; and understanding the expanding contribution of established and emerging therapies. It will also examine how rapidly evolving blood pressure technologies could make assessment more accurate, convenient and scalable, while recognising the importance of robust validation and sound measurement technique.
Finally, transforming hypertension care requires more than better technology and treatments: it requires a workforce with recognised expertise to lead change. Drawing on my work over the past four years to develop a structured hypertension accreditation pathway, the presentation will set out a vision for developing recognised specialists and accredited centres, underpinned by defined curricula, training and standards. A tiered approach could widen expertise across pharmacists, GPs, advanced clinical practitioners and specialist trainees while creating a clear route to advanced specialist accreditation. The aim is not simply to confer credentials, but to build a sustainable network of expertise able to lead complex care, strengthen services, train others and cascade best practice across the healthcare system. Together, technology, treatments, targets and training offer the opportunity to move hypertension from a still-inadequately addressed risk factor to a coordinated prevention strategy capable of transforming cardiovascular health across Greater Manchester and beyond.

As a long-term condition that is becoming increasingly common, Parkinson’s is encountered across many medical specialties as people live longer and develop other health problems. A number of new ways of understanding and managing the condition have emerged in recent years, with more on the horizon. This talk will look at some of these developments at different levels, from molecules and cells, through organs and systems, to the whole person and their interactions with others, considering what they might mean for patients and for everyday clinical practice.
