Humanitarian Oral and Maxillofacial Experience aboard the Hospital ships in Africa:
management of huge uncontrolled oral-facial benign tumours
Mr Geoff Chiu
Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
Honorary Lecturer, University of Manchester
Talk Synopsis:
The charity Mercyships have two purpose built modern Hospital ships, which serve the costal countries of Africa. The international crew of volunteers provide "1st world" health care to patients who have little access or no to specialist care. On board there are surgeons from different specialities, a dental team along with the nursing and support staff you would expect to find in a UK hospital.
From an Oral and Maxillofacial perspective untreated benign tumours from the jaws and face grow to significant facial disfiguring sizes. The aim of this talk is to increase awareness of the amazing hard work that these health care volunteers provide and demonstrate how huge uncontrolled oral-facial benign tumours are managed.
Its a humbling experience and it would be amazing if you could help too! 🙂
Learning points:
- Management of uncontrolled benign oral pathology;
- Humanitarian efforts of healthcare providers;
- Educating healthcare in developing countries.
