"Blueprint for the Future: How Evidence Shapes What We Teach and How We Assess in Paediatrics"
Talk synopsis:
Medical education is undergoing a fundamental shift from static, knowledge-based testing to dynamic, evidence-driven evaluation. This presentation explores the evolution of paediatric curricula and assessments, highlighting how educational theory directly informs clinical competence and patient safety.
By weaving together John Biggs’ principle of Constructive Alignment, Bloom’s Taxonomy of cognitive depth, and Miller’s Pyramid of clinical performance, the session illustrates how to bridge the gap between textbook learning and real-world ward practice. Moving from the traditional, paper-based exams of the past to today's workplace-based assessments, we look ahead what might come in future _ continuous digital dashboards, programmatic assessment, and immersive simulation.
Designed to be interactive and practical, this talk is aimed to provide trainers and trainees alike with actionable strategies to transform assessment from a tick-box exercise into a meaningful ways for learning, growth, and quality child health care.
Learning Objectives:
- Critique Paediatric Assessment Models: Evaluate the evolution of assessment in paediatrics—from traditional written exams to workplace-based assessments—identifying their strengths and limitations in measuring clinical competence.
- Apply Constructive Alignment: Map intended learning outcomes directly to teaching activities and assessment tasks by synthesizing Bloom’s Taxonomy with Miller’s Pyramid.
