Kenneth Bloor Memorial Fund Travel Scholarship 2025

Section of Surgery members

A memorial fund was set up in 1987 in honour of Mr Kenneth Bloor (Consultant Vascular Surgeon), who was president-elect of the Section of Surgery but whose untimely death in 1986 prevented him from taking office as President.  The aim of the fund was to provide a travelling scholarship to be given to assist surgeons in training to travel to other centers.

Applicants, who must be surgeons in training, should email a brief curriculum vitae and a plan for their proposed travel and study to admin@mms.org.uk by no later than 31st March 2025

  • The Scholarship is intended to support applicants that wish to enhance a specialty skill or experience that may not be available in the UK. Travel for the sole purpose of attending a scientific meeting will not be supported.
  • Applicants must demonstrate that the period overseas relates directly to their surgical training scheme's objectives and/or an opportunity to obtain relevant surgical experience that is not normally available in the UK.
  • The overseas visit can be for an observership of between 2 to 3 weeks or for a period of between 3 to 12 months.  All applications must be made prior to embarking on the visit.

Applications will be assessed by members of the Council of the Section of Surgery and applicants may be called for an interview.  Preference will be given to those who have not been awarded the Scholarship previously.

Applications forms for membership of the Manchester Medical Society can be completed online at Join – MMS

The successful applicant will be awarded a cheque for £750 for travel after the 1st May 2025.  They will be asked to present the results of his/her experience in a short presentation prior to a general meeting of the Section of Surgery.  Council has the right not to award a scholarship if the entries do not reach an adequate standard.
